Bonfire Night and Winter Magic

Hi there!

A weird thing happened earlier today. I was watching a bit of Bake Off at lunch and an ad popped up for a temporary channel dedicated to bonfire night for dogs.

It's apparently a collection of movies that will somehow distract your dog from the many fireworks about to be lighting things up outside. I'm a bit skeptical.

Remember, remember the 5th of November

Bonfire night is celebrated every year on November 5th. It's also called Guy Fawkes Night, and commemorates the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605. That plot saw a group of conspirators, including Guy Fawkes, attempting without success to blow up Parliament and King James I.

These days the celebration usually is marked with fireworks displays as well as bonfires. One of the biggest celebrations takes place in Lewes, just down the coast from where I live.

I'll be honest that the large celebrations have always made me a little uneasy. The whole parading an effigy through town speaks to violence in a way I've never been comfortable with. If you're seeing this while visiting, keep in mind that BBC reported warnings not to attend the Lewes celebration as a visitor this year.

A little movie magic at London's Design Museum

For something I do recommend including on your next visit, consider checking out the LAIKA exhibit at London's Design Museum.

I recently went to see Wildwood in the cinema, the latest stop-motion film from this studio, and it was incredible. In a world that is increasingly AI-based, the chance to see painstaking artistry like this shouldn't be missed.

The exhibit traces the filmmaking process for Wildwood and includes puppets, scaled scenery, and more. I have this one on my winter bucket list for a London day out.

London's ice skating season is almost here!

Speaking of winter bucket list experiences, ice skating rinks are beginning to pop up again all over the country.

My favorite to visit every year is SKATE at Somerset House. Even if you don't want to step on the ice yourself, trust me that stopping in to see this gorgeous courtyard done up for the season is worth the stop.

Hi there! With Halloween just around the corner, I thought we'd explore some of Britain's spookier traditions. After all, when you've got this many centuries of bloody history, there's no shortage of ghost stories to tell! Weirdly, Halloween is very much viewed as an American holiday here. You won't find the same level of dedication to haunted houses or trick-or-treating. You might also be surprised to learn that there's another autumn celebration just around the corner that you might not...

Hi friend, Even if you've not yet visited the UK, you've probably heard about the tea obsession in this country. I still prefer coffee even after five years here, but I have to admit that a good cuppa has a way of sneaking into my routine more than it ever did in the US. Most people visiting associate tea drinking with afternoon tea. If you've been dreaming of tiered trays of treats with a steaming pot of tea, it can be a wonderful way to spend your time. However, a lot of the afternoon tea...

Hi there! Things have been a wee bit hectic around here lately. My husband got news in August that his role at work was being made redundant. Crap news at any time, but we found this out the week before we were planning to apply for permanent residence, called indefinite leave to remain (ILR) here in the UK. One of the requirements of ILR for those who've been on a skilled worker visa is a letter from your employer stating that they intend to continue employing you for the foreseeable future....
