How different is housing in the UK compared to America?

The Housing Culture Shock

It's hard to believe it's been nearly three years since I moved my family to the UK (for the second time). In spite of how long we've been here, and having now experienced several different rental houses, we are still sometimes surprised by what's normal in homes here compared to the US.

From living in a rainy country with no clothes dryer to tiptoeing up steep staircases, we've definitely had to adapt. I recently updated my blog article 30 Big Differences Between British vs. American Houses. Check it out if you're contemplating a move or just curious how things work here.

I've also been surprised by the American things I thought I'd never be able to give up. For example, my current house has no dishwasher. It's just us and the sink when washing up comes along.

Ironically, I've found we stay on top of cleaning dishes better now because we are more likely to do dishes after each meal instead of waiting to fill the dishwasher.

What home convenience would you have a hard time living without?

Travel Find of the Week

West Wycombe Park is a beautiful country park west of London, and I recently discovered that it stood in for a suburban park in one of my favorite movies. In the beginning of Labyrinth, Jennifer Connelly runs across a bridge on her way home to babysit her baby stepbrother. That bridge actually stands here in England. Who knew?

I hope you're looking forward to a lovely week, wherever you are. I'll be traveling soon, but will be back with you in a couple of weeks.

See you next time!

Hi friends, I've been thinking about confidence lately. When I told people I was leaving my career to move abroad, I either got the response of "you're so brave" or "I could never". A lot of people said "I wish I had your confidence". The funny thing is, I don't think confidence works the way most people think it does. I wasn't confident this move would work out. Things like how we would find a good place to live or how my kid would settle into an entirely new school system genuinely...

Hi there! I hope all is well in your part of the world. We are in juggle mode at the moment because a problem with the rental house we were supposed to move into today has made us push back moving for a month. Meanwhile, we're getting ready to head to the US for a family visit. I swear, everything I own is in a box or suitcase. 3 Things I Always Bring When I Travel Having everything packed in some way made me think about my travel items that I bring along no matter where I'm traveling. I made...

Hi there! I hope your summer is off to a great start! Things have been a little wild around here because we somehow decided to jam GCSE exams, moving to a new rental house, and heading to America for a family trip all into a very small window. My daughter is finishing GCSEs this year, which is a whole thing that deserves it's own detailed explainer. The TLDR version is: Imagine high school sophomores taking 20+ standardized essay-format tests over about a month. Now imagine those tests are...
