The biggest mistake I made in budgeting for our move was under-estimating the cost of recreating a normal home. We sold or donated most of our furniture and belongings before the move, so everything from forks and spoons to bedding and towels had to start over from scratch.

Quick Budget Tip for UK Travel

One of my favorite ways to save money on UK travel is to book train tickets as early as possible.

Train fares in Britain often increase significantly as travel dates approach. I've seen journeys that cost three or four times more when booked a few days before departure versus several weeks ahead.

If you're planning a UK trip, it's worth checking prices for major train journeys as soon as your dates are firm and booking opens. A good rule of thumb for when to check is 12 weeks ahead for most train tickets in the UK.

In the News: Global Peace Index

The 2026 edition of the Global Peace Index is out. This year, the United Kingdom ranks 39th in the world, falling from 30th in last year's ranking. This does, however, still keep it well above the US, which came in at 134th.

The rankings come as more Americans are expressing interest in living abroad, often citing issues such as crime, cost of living, work-life balance, and quality of life.
