UK Hot Hits Different

Look, I grew up outside Houston, Texas. I know what crazy heat feels like. So why do people in the UK always show up on my social media complaining when the temperature hits 80F?

There's several reasons for this, like buildings made to absorb heat and the city glass/concrete combo bouncing heat around. But I think there's one reason that overrides all that: no air conditioning.

Temperatures that would have felt fairly normal back in Texas or California are inescapable when no place is cool.

Where to Keep Cool in London

Our southern based capital city tends to bear the burden of heatwaves harder than the countryside or cities up north. So in case you find yourself planning a trip in the midst of a heatwave, here is where I'd turn:

• V&A Museum - unlike the well-known British Museum, this one is fully air conditioned. You'll also find a splashable fountain in the central courtyard perfect for dipping your toes or cooling overheated kids.
• ​SeaLife Aquarium - this isn't found on any of my must-see lists, but it is fully air conditioned and the soothing dark water can be a nice respite from the heat.
• The Postal Museum - fully air conditioned and has the bonus opportunity to visit London's former mail delivery tunnels, which also keep cool.
• The Elizabeth Line - If I didn't already love the Lizzie line for its lower crowds and lovely stations, the functioning air conditioning (not to be found on many other lines) would sell me for sure.
• Art Galleries - When art needs protecting, you're more likely to find climate control. Head to the Tate Modern, Tate Britain or the National Gallery for a cultural day out that won't leave you melting.
• ​Thames Clippers - Not air conditioned, but the boat service zipping up and down the Thames will at least provide a nice breeze while you continue to sightsee. Take it from central London out to Greenwich and you can reward yourself with air conditioning at the National Maritime Museum.
